KUCHING: All divisional football associations have been urged to allocate RM5,000 annually to set up at least one Under-12 football academy this year.
Football Association of Sarawak (FAS) deputy president Haidel Heli said the allocation would be founded by the associations with collaboration with the parent body (FAS) and State Education Department and individuals who were willing to help. "FAS will start the 2011 calendar by setting up the academy for U-12 with the Samarahan Football Association."
Haidel reasoned out that the principle role of setting up the academy was to groom potential players for the age group competitions. "We have yet to see an academy established to cater for players 12 and below but we have one for above 12. I believe that football for U-12 is important to build a strong character of the players apart from focusing on developing individuals skills and teamwork."
He added that FAS would provide all its divisional affiliates coaches to assist in the grassroots development.
