Alan Vest
Playing a huge role in Sarawak football in the early 90’s, Vest now is instrumental to the future of the state’s football as he is taking the task of streamlining and prepare guidelines for the youth’s squad falling under the five year plan.“He will be overseeing our youths team (A and B) which is based at the Telekom college in Samariang,” said Lucas Kallang, development programme project manager yesterday.
Lucas also said the Vest will be observing the youths matches and analyse the players and recommend what needs to be improved especially the technical aspects of every department on the field.
He also said that Vest will be visiting some of the development centres on his trip here before returning home on January 25 where he works part time as a local radio commentator for sports and overseeing a university team in Perth.
“He will focus mainly on the youth teams to strengthen the basic structure of the squad,” said Lucas adding that he will also be working with the Sarawak Cup squad coached by Shamsurin Abdul Rahman who was one of Vest’s top strikers in the 90’s.
“Basically a huge teamwork effort is needed as this will be a long term process,” added Lucas of the development programme which involves the Ministry of Social Development and Urbanisation, Football Association of Sarawak, MSNS and the state education department.
With the success of the Inter-centre Football Development League in mid 2010, the leagues was held at the Northern Zone on July 14 to 20, Central zone on July 21 to 25 and the Southern zone on July 26 to 31 had a total of 640 players from 31 schools.
Organised by the State Education Department with the support of the Sarawak State Sports Council (MSNS) the tournament is a platform to gauge the effectiveness of the five-year football development programme which was launched in 2009 between the three identified zones.
Teams from the Northern zone included schools from Limbang and Bintulu, whereas the central zone saw the participation of schools from Kapit, Sarikei and Mukah whereas the Southern zone saw schools from Kuching, Samarahan, Sri Aman and Betong.
